The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) has awarded Social Impact a contract to conduct the independent evaluation of the Kosovo Energy Storage Project. SI will carry out the evaluation in partnership with Rhiza Research, a nonprofit that specializes in power systems planning and power quality monitoring.

The project is investing in battery energy storage to help Kosovo’s grid manage frequency and stay stable as more variable power sources come online, alongside policy reforms needed for the batteries to operate effectively. Over seven years, the evaluation will collect baseline data before the batteries connect to the grid, assess the project at the end of the compact, and follow up two years later to measure whether the expected results were achieved. It will examine how the storage systems are used, how they affect grid stability, and how the related reforms are implemented.

The award adds to SI’s more than 15 years of evaluation work for MCC across energy, infrastructure, and policy reform.
