DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION & BELONGING (DEI&B)

CreedInAction.orgSocial Impact (SI) is committed to building a people-centered organization that is focused on cultivating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture that prioritizes the individual contributions and belonging of all. We believe that such a culture will make us better and more effective in achieving our mission to advance development effectiveness. Our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEI&B) policy, along with our company-wide DEI&B strategic objectives, serve to reinforce the commitment, goals, and guidance that will enhance and support DEI&B at Social Impact.

Social Impact’s main goals are as follows:

  • Diversity: Identify, Attract, Engage and Retain diverse talent
  • Equity: Ensure transparency and equitable treatment of all in our people policies and communication practices
  • Inclusion: Establish employee resource groups, create professional development practices, and utilize HR metric data to inform inclusive change and progress
  • Belonging: Enable an environment where our collective diversity is valued and all SI staff feel welcome and accepted as they are

SI has always strived to go beyond what is expected and forge a new path in the international development sector, and our commitment encapsulates our overall goal to promote and prioritize DEI&B both in our organization as well as in our sector. In 2021 SI led an initiative to develop the first ever benchmarking of DEI in the international development and humanitarian assistance sector. BRIDGE (Benchmarking Race Inclusion and Diversity in Global Engagement) was a landmark study that documented the diversity gaps within our sector and has been widely used at the organizational and sectoral level to drive change. SI also became a founding member of the Coalition for Racial & Ethnic Equity in Development (CREED), which is a collective of U.S.-based international development and humanitarian assistance organizations committed to building racial and ethnic equity (REE). We have made the pledge to advance racial and ethnic diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within our own organizations’ policies, systems, and culture in keeping with attainable and measurable goals and work to instill REE in international development.

OUR HISTORY

1996
Rolf Sartorius and Patricia Hanscom form Social Impact in response to a growing global emphasis on making international development more effective in improving people’s lives. SI mobilizes a small group of outstanding global consultants with a deep appreciation for participatory development and results-based management.
1997

SI focuses on applying best practices in program design to address HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. After passage of the Government Performance and Results Act, SI develops new tools and approaches to support results-based management of U.S. foreign assistance.

2000s

SI helps the World Bank enhance its effectiveness as a development agency. SI works with USAID’s Office of Transition Initiatives to strengthen program planning and management in fragile states. SI conducts impact evaluations for the US Millennium Challenge Corporation and partners with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
2010s

SI opens its first overseas project office in Beirut, Lebanon. SI begins work with the MasterCard Foundation and provides services through the DFID Global Evaluation Framework Agreement. SI is named USAID Small Business of the Year in 2013 for demonstrating best practices in the field and serving as a model for small and minority-owned implementing partners. In 2014, SI graduates from small business status.
2020s

SI operates numerous project offices overseas and expands it work to the domestic sector by launching a domestic line of business. SI also develops new service lines such as data science, third-party monitoring and digital solutions. SI leads the development and implementation of the BRIDGE survey – the first-ever benchmarking of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in the global development sector. SI launched the Equity Lab to address issues at the intersection of DEI and Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL).
Future

As a mid-size business, SI continues and grows its work providing long- and short-term technical and consulting support supporting long-term program field offices and engaging in across hundreds of short-term projects across the globe. SI continues to attract new clients, new talent, and to further its mission to advance development program effectiveness.
